The void created by the failures of Govinda has been well filled up this Punjab da Puttar who has dished out some of the best comic acts of the recent times like Hera Pheri, Awara Paagal Deewana, Mujhse Shaadi Karogi, Phir Hera Pheri, Bhagam Bhaag and the recent hit ‘Namastey London’. Akshay’s comic roles have been appreciated immensely both by the classes and the masses. There’s that spark in his eyes that you see in a teenager. There’s that acceptance in the way she talks and her body language when he is around her that signifies that her heart misses a beat every time he is around. He is 64 and she is 34 and they are hopelessly falling head-over-heels in love. Yes, what’s age got to do with emotions of love - whether you are 60 or 20, the heart reacts in the same manner!

At least this is a believable romance, as compared to Ram Gopal Varma’s NISHABD, where an 18-year-old seduces a 60-plus Amitabh. Point to note here is that the Mr Bachchan is very, very comfortable in his romantic scenes with Tabu. With Jiah Khan, there was the awkwardness that came with the huge age gap.

CHEENI KUM is a cool film laced with good humour. I would call it a mature romance between two very mature adults who know very well what they are getting into and why. It’s not a situation where boy and girl want to run and marry. In fact, Amitabh has a tough time in getting Paresh Rawal (his to-be-father-in-law) to agree, who incidentally is six years younger to him! Now who would want a son-in-law that old! That’s what makes this film delightful.

Amitabh as Buddhadev Gupta, is eccentric in the way he deals with his restaurant staff, his mother played by Zohra Sehgal and Tabu, his love interest. Only later you grow to love his character which actually is laced with lots of love. This aspect is pried open by his one and only ‘sexy’, an eight-year-old neighbour who is dying of leukemia. The scenes between the two have flashes of BLACK. The maturity of the eight-year-old and the counseling sessions they have is something that is believable. And when he gets the news of her passing away just after Paresh Rawal agrees to let his daughter marry him, Amitabh is in his elements. Both emotions of elation and extreme sadness are captured well by the director and executed superbly by the graceful Bachchan. Zohra Sehgal who is witness to her son’s moment of truth, too, is captured brilliantly by the camera.

Scenes to watch out for: Between Amitabh and his mother Zohra Sehgal; Amitabh and the eight-year-old; Amitabh and Tabu; Amitabh and Paresh Rawal.

There’s a dash of sweetness (Tabu), the right amount of spice (Amitabh), a proper dose of lime (Paresh Rawal), perfect quantity of salt (‘sexy’) and tadka (provided by Zohra Sehgal). A clean entertainer which can be watched by the entire family

It is good to see director Suneel Darshan slither out of his old skin, shed his old style of making overtly sentimental and soppy movies, and try a new genre in his latest flick Shakalaka Boom Boom .

‘Shakalaka’ has a dose of all those ingredients that will catch the pulse of today’s youth. It has looks, style, music, glamour and skin show (thanks to Celina Jaitley). This cocktail makes the movie go Shakalaka in the first half. And when the egos of the film’s protagonists collide in the second half, the film goes Boom Boom. Although there are fronts on which the movie falters, overall it remains a fairly enjoyable watch.

AJ ( Bobby Deol ) is a singer-composer-dancer at the pinnacle of his career in New York. He hogs the top spot on the music charts.

Reggie ( Upen Patel ) is the new kid on the block. He is immensely talented, has a natural knack for composing catchy melodies, and has scant respect for AJ’s music. On top of it, Reggie is highly ambitious and out to topple AJ from his undisputed top spot.

Ruhi ( Kangana Ranaut ) is a budding singer who happens to be the lucky girl the two men in the story fall for. She adores AJ, but an indecent proposal from him drives her away from him. Rather, Ruhi falls for the charm of Reggie.

And then there is Sheena ( Celina Jaitley ), a PR professional with captivating curves and cleavage.

Reggie literally uses Sheena as the first rung on his ladder to fame, uses her contacts to come to the notice of big shots in the music industry, and once his job is done, he conveniently dumps her (God knows why).

The mind games begin when AJ realizes that Reggie can threaten his position in the music industry. Skidding through all the manipulative tricks in the trade of cut-throat competition, ‘Shakalaka Boom Boom’ reaches its high note with a predictable duel between the two protagonists. And the better one of the two men wins.

SBB is a better product than Suneel Darshan ’s previous pakaoo films, but the filmmaker’s execution still has much room for improvement. The modern look, sleek cinematography, the styling of characters and the catchy music are all right, it is the presentation of the story which is not without some obvious clichés.

The film’s plot traverses a very stereotypical path in the most part of the first half. Just before the interval, a slight twist kindles your almost faded interest. From there on, the movie builds on the rivalry between Bobby and Upen. The egos are ruffled, people are manipulated, trust is broken and mind games are played.

Bobby Deol gives a notable performance as a man of inflated ego, intoxicated with success. And for the first time Upen Patel gives something to write about his performance. Upen’s arrival infuses some life into the lethargic pace of the film in the first half. Although his acting still leaves much to be desired, the boy has a charm that comes through on the silver screen.

Kangana Ranaut is efficient while Celina Jaitley looks ravishing. There is hardly any chemistry between Bobby and Kangana. On the other hand, Kangana’s scenes with Upen are much better.

Himesh Reshammiya ’s music is the backbone of this film. The singer-composer has slightly strayed away from his usual style in a number of small songs.

To sum it up, ‘Shakalaka Boom Boom’ is no great shakes. It is an above average product that provides full timepass entertainment.

Heena Rahman, is a rich and the spoilt wife of Aryan Vaid, who has to spend lonely nights, as d her husband is a lecherous womaniser and is always out on his escapades. Once Aryan catches his wife red-handed, in the arms of his best friend and colleague, Tarun Arora. In a fit of rage, he beats her up, and crashes into a glass table, with splinters strewn all over face. Assuming her to be dead, the two men drags Heena's torso to a graveyard. To their utter shock, Heena wakes up suddenly and pleads with her husband not to bury her alive. But he does not pay heed and she Is buried alive. Now, Heena's ghost begins to haunt Aryan, his friend Tarun and even the servant Kahnaaz.

The film offers full scope for terrifying moments like the spirit of Heena coming to knock the door, Aryan Vaid seeing a flying Kainaaz in his own house before her death. Tarun Arora's killing by Heena and the climax portions where Aryan Vaid is trapped by Heena. There are also several titillating scenes, involving the bikini and bathing scenes of Pooja Bharti.

Production values are appropriate. Technically, fair. Cinematography by Gangu Ramsay is eye-catchy. Sound design by Klran Ramsay and background score by Surendra Sodhi are some of the highlights in post production. Editing is tight.
Story and screenplay are commonplace for this genre, while the dialogue are fair. Art direction is okay.

Musically, average. Special effects are adequate.

Performancewlse, Aryan Vaid does a good job. Heena Rahman in her debut film, shows immense promise. Tarun Arora is excellent. Pooja Bharti looks fetching. Gufi Paintal, Amit Shankar, Shahbaz Khan and Hlmanl Shivpurl lend fair support. Directorlally, Shyam Ramsay does a neat job. At the Box-Office, the film will have better chances in B and C class centres.

Bollywood has a dull time so far in 2007. The only major success in Bollywood was Guru. After that, no movie could click in the box office that well. So, many Bollywood observers are keenly waiting for Jhoom Barabar Jhoom. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom features stars like Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Bobby Deol, Lara Dutta and Amitabh Bachchan. So, it has some stars who have presented us with super hit films.

Mera Pehla Pehla Pyar : Movie Review

It is a flick that takes you back to your school days. Back to the times when you had your first crush. However, you may not have pursued the girl you loved to the extent the young protagonist in Mera Pehla Pehla Pyar does – right to the Eiffel Tower in a Tom Cruise style.

For teenagers, ‘MP3’ is a film they can directly relate to. For adults, it is a trip down the memory lane. And mind you, memory never fades when it comes to one’s first love. You always remember it.

There may be nothing stellar about MP3, but everything about the film is surely refreshing. It has a refreshing storyline, two new faces (and captivating ones at that), youthful music (not necessarily addictive), good cinematography, and fine direction from Robby Grewal.

The film tells a sweet love story between Rohan ( Ruslaan Mumtaaz ) and Ayesha ( Hazel ).

Rohan and his group of friends enjoy the school life to the fullest. They attend classes, bunk them, talk about girls, talk about their sexy schoolteacher, play pranks, and do all the things that any pack of brats of their age would do.

Ayesha is a fresher who has come from abroad. Her first meeting with Rohan is a bit bizarre. After a series of interesting encounters, the two become friends and eventually fall in love.

What follows is the usual teasing and bantering by their friends. But there are also those who don’t want the love story to succeed.

A misunderstanding drives Ayesha away from Rohan. She leaves for Paris. Separated from Ayesha, Rohan realizes how much he loves her. He vows to find her again. Even if he has to cross the continents and propose her right under the Eiffel Tower, just like Tom Cruise did to Katie Holmes.

The best thing about MP3 is that its director Robby Grewal has tried to tell the film’s story not from an adult’s perspective but from the point of view of a teenager. The jokes and pranks in the film are somewhat childish. But that doesn’t put you off. Rather, you relate to them and smile indulgently.

The movie also works because of good performances by Ruslaan and Hazel. Ruslaan has a clear dialogue delivery. He is also very convincing in playing a besotted teen. Hazel is charmingly beautiful but is not so expressive in her acting. Among other actors, Kanwaljeet (as Rohan’s father) does a good job.

Don’t go expecting anything stellar from ‘MP3’ and you will find the movie eminently enjoyable.
